And that’s also the case here on Waginger See. In the Chiemgau Region, horses have always been an important part of daily life. In earlier times, especially when it came to doing forestry work, they were practically indispensable. And that’s why we see horses in the stables at many farms even today.
The importance of these animals, and the respect they are given, is still very tangible in the countryside and communities near Waginger See. This includes a tradition known as horse pilgrimages – essentially, horse parades concluding with the riders and their mounts receiving a blessing from the church – such as the Leonhardiritt in St. Leonhard am Wonneberg and the Georgiritt in Tittmoning.
Of course, tradition isn’t the only reason why there are still so many horses on Waginger See. They are also popular because of that glorious feeling of freedom you enjoy as you take a ride through the beautiful countryside.
